There are around 18,000 street lights and 2,500 signs, bollards and pedestrian crossing beacons in the Borough of Poole.
We check each street light’s condition every 3 years, and each bollard, sign and beacon every year. In between these times a night patrol is carried out every month on signs and bollards. We rely on members of the public to report faulty street lights.
Reporting a fault
You can report a fault to us using our online form. If it is a dangerous fault such as a leaning or damaged street light or electrical wires are exposed, please call us on 01202 262223 during office hours or 0800 506050 out of office hours so we can arrange a priority response.
The standard response time is 10 working days. Extra work may be required after this visit which can extend the time taken to repair the light. For further details on fault repair time scales, or if you have already reported a fault and would like more information, please have a look at the street lighting FAQs.
Investment in street lighting replacement
By April 2018, most of the street lights in the borough were replaced with energy efficient LED lighting. Between November 2015 and April 2016 we replaced almost 8,500 lanterns on existing lamp posts and we also replaced a further 8,500 complete lamp posts which are over 40 years old between April 2016 and April 2018. All existing part night lighting schemes across the borough will be replaced with the LED lighting scheme. There are 650 lamp posts to be replaced in 2018/19.
Seasonal decorative lighting
Festive and decorative lighting are a welcome sight and bring pleasure to many people, particularly at Christmas. We support the use of seasonal decorations wherever possible but, as a highway authority, must safeguard all users of the highway. Therefore, an application process is in place to ensure that any installations of seasonal decorations in areas on or around the highway are provided in a safe manner and in accordance with relevant national guidelines.
Applicants should submit their proposals at least 2 months in advance, but ideally longer where the proposals are more complex. Further information on the application process is included in the seasonal lighting guidance notes.
An application for a miscellaneous activity on the highway licence will also be required.
