Understanding Flood Risk in Poole

Following the national floods of 2007, which affected over 55,000 homes and businesses across the UK, the Government made it a legal requirement to produce a Local Flood Risk Management Strategy. This ensures every Lead Local Flood Authority takes strategic responsibility for managing the risk of flooding.

Poole's Draft Local Flood Risk Management Strategy is currently available for comment on the Council's Planning Consultation Portal until 10 March 2016.

Councillor John Rampton, Portfolio Holder for the Environment & Consumer Protection, Borough of Poole said: "Poole, unlike many other areas across the UK, has not experienced severe internal flooding of property so our current primary tool for identifying future flood risk is being generated by computer modelling. We want people to read the draft strategy to increase their knowledge of all flood risk in Poole and tell us if they agree with the way we intend to manage and assess the risks into the future.

"To begin with we will use information provided by the Environment Agency but, over time, the computer modelling will be updated with real information following storm and rain events that affect our town. This will serve to make our computer modelling, and thereby flood predictions, increasingly accurate," he continued.

The computer modelling will use Surface Water Management Plans to address all types of flooding from tides, surface water and drainage. Solutions will then be investigated for these specific areas and discussed with other organisations to help identify funding opportunities and a timescale for implementation of potential solutions. However, there will be areas where there is no environmental or economic solution to protect property and/or infrastructure. In such circumstances Borough of Poole will work with the Local Resilience Forum so they can plan to respond to flooding risk or incidents in the most efficient way.
