Poole Libraries launch new scheme to support young people’s mental health

Poole Libraries has launched a scheme to support teenagers with mental health issues with expert endorsed books available to borrow for free.

The Reading Agency, in partnership with the Society of Chief Librarians and Association of Senior Children’s and Education Librarians, has launched a reading list for young people. The books have been chosen by young people and health experts and each of the ten Poole libraries has a collection of the core list of books available.

The books are easy to find on special Reading Well ‘Shelf Help’ display stands and are for any young person who would benefit from reading books that can help them to cope with the pressures of life, feel better about themselves and boost their confidence.

‘Reading Well for young people’ is a national scheme, part of the hugely successful Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme. They provide 13 to 18 year olds with high-quality information, support and advice on a wide-range of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and self-harm, and difficult life pressures, including bullying and exams.

Councillor Mohan Iyengar, Portfolio Holder for Libraries and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: “This is such a helpful scheme for teenagers looking for general support and guidance for common mental health conditions. They can find additional help in a safe and comfortable environment on their own terms and in their own time.”
