Poets of Poole Libraries

Borough of Poole is pleased to announce the winners of Poole Libraries’ National Libraries Day poetry competition.

The competition invited people of all ages to get creative and write a poem about Poole libraries and what they enjoy about them. Two talented poets were chosen as winners.

The adult winner, Susan Hole, is a regular at Creekmoor Library where she is a member of the reading group and quiz team. Susan’s poem celebrates the variety of different things happening in libraries these days, the friendly welcome, and the fact that it is all free. Susan said: “I’ve met people, made friends, it’s been lovely.”

Susan is often inspired by the books she reads to write poetry, and is a member of Poole Poetry Group. Susan won a Kindle Fire and is now going to attend a session in the library to learn how to use it.

Callum Sulyma, age 6, a Poole Central Library customer, won the children’s competition. Callum won an African Safari book for his lovely poem all about the things he likes to do in the library. Callum recently moved to Poole from Canada.

Winning Poems:

Why I love my library

By Susan Hole

Is it for tea and cosy chat,

the quiz, or entertainment that

makes you laugh like playing charades;

or meeting up for games of cards?

Maybe books, or the friendly staff,

they welcome you and make you laugh.

Who could not love their library?

It’s vibrant, local, and it’s free!

Callum’s poem

I really like the library,

there’s so many good books to read.

But there’s more than books, there’s games too.

There’s so many things to do,

it’s hard to choose.

The library cheers me up

Because it’s so fun.

I like it more than the one in Canada.

notes to editors:
National Libraries Day was on 6 February 2016.
