Local residents make Poole’s first Community Resilience Day a success

Poole’s first ever Community Resilience Day proved to be a great hit with local residents.

The event organised by Borough of Poole aimed to help local communities be better prepared for and able to recover from, emergencies and disruptions such as severe weather like flooding, snow and ice. Support and advice was available from a range of organisations to encourage individuals and communities to be more self-reliant during emergencies, so that the council could focus on those areas and people in greatest need.

As well as helpful tips and advice, two competitions were ran throughout the day and local Hamworthy residents Shannon Zamora-Stevens and Tilly Matraves were delighted to hear that they had won an iPad and teddy bear respectively.

Councillor Les Burden, Chairman of the Emergency Committee, Borough of Poole, said: “We were very pleased with the response to this first event and we congratulate both Shannon and Tilly for winning their prize draws.

“This event was the first step in ensuring people knew how to protect themselves and their property in an emergency. We hope they came away from the event feeling better prepared to cope with the disruptions that affect them and their family's daily life when an emergency occurs. This event was so successful that we will be holding similar events on an annual basis throughout Poole.”

The event was sponsored by Morrish Builders, a successful regional and commercial property developer based in Poole, with over 60 years’ experience in building quality homes across the Southern counties.

Steven and David Morrish, Joint Managing Directors at Morrish Builders, said: “ “The community is always placed at the heart of every development we undertake so we are delighted to have sponsored this successful local event which focused on safeguarding the community. Health and safety features are always included in our properties, such as smoke alarms and security alarms.”
