Children’s maritime flags bring Poole to life

Amazing, colourful, creative and a real inspiration were some of the words used by the panel judging the Poole Maritime Festival children’s flag competition. 

Fifteen stunning maritime designs have been chosen from over 280 entries to decorate Poole during the upcoming Poole Maritime Festival which runs from 15 to 21 May.

The flags created by local children aged between 5 and 11 years old will now be turned into flags by Flagmakers and flown throughout Poole Town Centre before and during the prestigious European Maritime Day two day conference in just over a week's time. They will be seen by residents, visitors to the area and approximately 1,000 delegates from across Europe. 

Judged by an impressive line up of business and influential leaders, which included Cllr Xena Dion, Mayor of Poole, Andrew Flockhart, Chief Executive of Borough of Poole, Jim Stewart, Chief Executive of Poole Harbour Commissioners, Jane Fountain, Sales Manager and Charlotte Thomas-Lines, Sales Executive at Flagmakers, the flags will portray Poole’s rich maritime heritage. 

Mayor of Poole, Cllr Xena Dion, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our young people to show off their artistic streak and they certainly rose to the challenge. All the judges were blown away by the imaginative designs and it was really a tough decision to decide on the 15 winning flags. All the participants should be proud of their achievements and I can’t wait to see the winning flags on proud display in Poole.” 

Jim Stewart, Chief Executive of Poole Harbour Commissioners, said: “I thought that the quality of the flags submitted by the youngsters were of a very high quality. It was so difficult to choose between them however a big thank you to everyone who contributed.” 

Once the flags are taken down they will be given to the winning designers, together with a certificate, to keep as a memento of the part they played in one of the largest events to take place in Poole in recent years. 

The children’s flag competition has been kindly sponsored by Flagmakers, who have been making flags for over 175 years. 

Jane Fountain, Sales Manager, said: “Flagmakers are delighted to have sponsored this great competition and to have produced the winners’ flags. All of the entries were excellent with some very imaginative ideas. We would like to say well done to everyone who entered the competition and we are looking forward to seeing the colourful winning flags flying around the town.”
