Battle of the Somme memorial service

Mayor of Poole, Cllr Xena Dion held a service to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme at the War memorial in Poole Park.

A short Service was conducted by Rev Peter Homden to Commemorate the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme on Friday 1 July at 11am at the War Memorial in Poole Park. Rev Peter was joined by The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Xena Dion along with Veterans, ex-Service Personnel and their families.

Wreaths of poppies were laid for this commemoration and to pay tribute to those who served in this Battle. Mayor of Poole, Cllr Xena Dion laid a wreath, along with Sheriff Cllr Lindsay Wilson. A wreath of poppies was also laid on behalf of the British Legion.

Mayor of Poole, Cllr Xena Dion said “The Battle of the Somme is a very significant historic event and it’s important that we commemorate it appropriately. In different ways the Battle has touched the lives of each and every one of us. I was pleased to see so many other people join us particularly our local ex-Service personnel and Veterans.

“I would like to personally thank everyone who attended, and for their on going support”
