Twin Sails Bridge closes for planned maintenance

Poole’s Twin Sails Bridge will close for up to seven days from Monday 19 March to enable annual essential maintenance to be carried out

The bridge will be closed to all road traffic, including cyclists and pedestrians, from 7am. During the closure Poole Bridge will be operating as normal and there will be no significant disruption to marine traffic.

The works to be carried out include:

  • servicing the hydraulic systems
  • software and control system checks and adjustments
  • replacement of missing and failed LED road studs
  • replacement of failed lamps
  • checking passive interlocks which are located on the ends of the leaves below road level
  • pressure wash and clean whole bridge structure
  • repairing damaged road surfacing and loose/sunken road gullies and manhole covers

John Rice, Engineering Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "Our lifting bridges are an important part of our road network so it is essential that we carry out planned maintenance to keep them operating efficiently and reliably in the long term. As the Twin Sails Bridge was in operation throughout the refurbishment of Poole Bridge it didn’t get its annual maintenance last year.

“By closing the bridge outside of peak times in the year we will be able to minimise disruption to residents and road users who will always have one bridge available. We are sorry for any inconvenience this work may cause."
