New year, new career? Train to teach in Poole

Anyone interested in finding out more about a career in teaching should make a date in their diaries for Poole’s ‘Get Into Teaching’ event on Monday 23 January 2017.

Held at Poole High School from 5pm – 7pm, visitors to the event will have the opportunity to meet local training providers for both primary and secondary education, finding out more about this rewarding career.

Teacher training In Poole is provided in a school environment at both primary and secondary levels. Anyone applying for teacher training is assured hands-on training in a school, learning on the job from experienced colleagues and putting new skills into practice from day one.

Cllr Mike White, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Capital Projects, said: “Now is a great time to teach in Poole. Ofsted have congratulated Poole on our much improved school results in 2016 and through the strong partnership of our schools, teaching schools and the local authority we are working to further improve educational outcomes in Poole.”

Sarah Birt from Poole is just one of the many people who have found their way into teaching. She said: “As a mental health researcher I loved working with young people and training people, so I thought if I became a teacher I could get more involved with young people at an earlier age, motivate them and get them more engaged in school.

“I decided to teach maths and applied for the School Direct training route.  I first completed a subject knowledge enhancement course to make the transition from psychology to maths smoother and it made me feel better prepared. I love being a tutor. It’s amazing. The children are so smiley in the morning. I love seeing them in the corridor, when they are really happy to see you.”
