Further update on temporary closure of Poole Bridge

Poole Bridge is closed to all road traffic for safety reasons after two of the safety gates were damaged following a technical problem which occurred on Sunday 8 April 2018.

We are continuing our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fault.

We have already instructed a contractor to temporarily repair the two safety gates with a view to bringing the bridge back into operation by Monday 16 April. Two new gates have been ordered and will be fitted at the earliest opportunity.

In the meantime the pedestrian and cycle paths are fully open for use by the public and the normal lifting schedule has been resumed.

The previously advertised overnight closures will continue as planned to finish the outstanding work. Bridge Approach and Poole Bridge will be closed to all vehicles from 7pm and closed to pedestrians and cyclists from 9.30pm on Wednesday 18 April. The bridge will be fully re-open to all traffic from 5.30am on Thursday 19 April.

A further overnight closure will take place will take place from 7pm on Wednesday 25 April until 7am on Thursday 26 April. During this period one footpath will remain open at all times.

It’s important that we fully understand the reason behind the damage and the repairs required to enable the bridge to become fully operational. We are fully committed to a two-bridge operating system and the recent major refurbishment of Poole Bridge will ensure our bridges operate efficiently and effectively in the long term.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and would encourage road traffic to use the Twin Sails Bridge which is operating as normal.

Additional information

The contractor will be on site for a period of 4 to 6 weeks to complete the painting as previously reported in January. The bridge will remain open but there will be some off-peak lane closures to enable the contractor to access certain parts of the bridge.
