Council upbeat about Our Museum Project

Borough of Poole is upbeat about the future of the ‘Our Museum’ Project following an unsuccessful bid for Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) funding.

The Council submitted a round one bid in August 2018 for £2.1million to conserve and restore the medieval Town Cellars, creating a cultural attraction for local people and visitors.

The HLF announced their decision in January 2019, and although disappointed with the result, the Council is heartened that the HLF found the application to be very strong in all areas and encouraged it to reapply.

Cllr John Challinor, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Borough of Poole, said: “Funding schemes are highly competitive so it was inevitable that most applicants would be left disappointed and whilst our bid ticked all the right boxes only 7 out of 47 applications received funding.

“We can however be extremely proud of the great work that has been achieved, both in partnership with our key stakeholders and from the tremendous support received from the public during last summer’s public consultation. We would like to thank our staff, volunteers, trustees, local people, local businesses, community groups, visitors and all our stakeholders who helped shape our bid. Whilst this wasn’t the news we hoped for, we remain confident that we have a strong case and a solid platform for a future bid.”

Following last year’s public consultation, it was clear there was a very strong desire in the community for preserving Poole’s important historic buildings and for the Our Museum project to be a driver for the regeneration of Poole’s quayside, creating new opportunities for community and commercial activity making Poole a better place to live, work and visit.

Poole Museum will continue its programme of audience engagement which will support both the ongoing success of the Museum and help demonstrate more strongly the level of public and stakeholder support for the Our Museum project in a future bid.

The HLF are announcing a new funding framework on 30 January 2019 and the Council will look to submit a revised bid as part of that process.
