Dog attacks and dangerous dogs

It’s against the law to let a dog be dangerously out of control anywhere, such as:

  • in a public place
  • in a private place, for example a neighbour’s house or garden
  • in the owner’s home

The law applies to all dogs.

Some types of dogs are banned.

Dog on person attack

Report a dog on person attack to the police.

Call 101 for non-emergency.

Call 999 for emergency.

To report a dog on dog attack call 01202 261700:

  • 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday
  • 9am to 4.30pm Friday

If the incident happens outside these hours please call 0800 506050.

Alternatively you can report a dog on dog attack online.

We’ll look at the severity of the attack, the cost of vets bill and threat to public safety before we investigate.

If we investigate we can take the accused dog owner to court. The court can give an order for the dog to be muzzled and kept on a lead, neutering of the dog and an order to pay costs.
