Guidance for safer working practice for adults who work with children and young people

Safe recruitment is central to the safeguarding of children and young people. All organisations which employ staff or volunteers to work with children and young people have a duty to safeguard and promote their welfare. This includes ensuring that the organisation adopts safe recruitment and selection procedures which prevent unsuitable persons from gaining access to children.

Working Together to safeguard children provides guidance as does keeping Children Safe in Education. The previous government also produced guidance for any adult who may be worried that a child or young person is being abused. Similarly this guidance remains very useful and the most current guidance available, known as “What to do if you are worried a child is being abused".

Pan-Dorset Safeguarding Procedures set out local expectations in its chapter on Safer Recruitment and Employment.
