Funerals

A funeral can be either a burial or cremation and it can usually only take place after the death is registered.

You can find out what to do immediately after a death on the GOV.UK website.

Most people use a funeral director, but you can arrange a funeral yourself. You should check the will of the deceased to see what they wanted to happen to their body after their death.

You can find local funeral directors using the National Association of Funeral Directors and Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors.

Arranging a funeral yourself

You should contact our office either by phone or in person to book a funeral. You can start to arrange the funeral before the death is registered.

You'll need to visit the cemetery or crematorium office within 24 hours of making your booking to collect forms to fill in.

Municipal funerals

If somebody dies and there are no relatives, friends, will beneficiaries or executor to organise their funeral, the Coroner's Office will contact Environmental & Consumer Protection for burial assistance. You can download details of funerals carried out by the us, these are updated quarterly.

What we need to know

If you're booking a cremation, we need to know:

  • the date and time of the proposed cremation service
  • the name of the deceased
  • your name and contact telephone number

If you're booking a burial, we need to know:

  • the date and time of the proposed burial
  • if you need to use the chapel
  • if the burial is to take place in a new or existing grave
  • the name of the deceased
  • your name and contact telephone number

Paying for a funeral

Free, impartial advice on arranging funerals is available from the Bereavement Services team based at Poole Crematorium. Funeral directors may also have individual plans and payment schemes to help with the cost of funerals.

Where money is an issue and you are in receipt of certain benefits or entitlements you may qualify for a funeral payment from the Social Fund made by the Department of Work and Pensions.

If you need help towards the cost of a funeral and you are receiving certain types of benefit, you may qualify for a one-off funeral expense payment. You can find advice on funeral payments on the GOV.UK website.
