Register a birth

Details of how to register the birth of your child and make an appointment to call and see us.

When and where to register

You must register the birth of your baby within 42 days of the baby's birth.

If your baby was born in Poole you should register the birth at Poole Register Office.

You must book an appointment.

Register Office opening times:

  • Monday to Thursday: 9am to 4.30pm
  • Friday: 9am to 4pm

If your baby was born outside the Borough of Poole area, you can come to our offices and we'll send a declaration to the relevant office for you. This is subject to appointments being available.

Birth certificates

You can buy copies of the birth certificate when you register the birth. This is needed for things like passport applications, school admissions, and opening a bank account.

Each certificate costs:

  • £4 - at registration
  • £7 - up to four weeks after registration
  • £10 - after four weeks from the last entry
  • £25 - after four weeks from the last entry (same day collection)

You can pay by cash, debit or credit card.
