Throughout the year we have been giving away food waste saving packs. They contained a helpful handbook full of tips and advice. They also had useful goodies such as a menu planner and a spaghetti measure.
We asked participants to complete a questionnaire before and after using the bags, so we could measure the impact.
We gave away over 3,000 goodie bags in Poole.
From the questionnaires we found out the three main reasons that people waste food:
- past use by date
- partially used food
- cooked too much
You can avoid through simple things such as meal planning and portion control.
Of those who completed a post questionnaire, 62% said they have reduced their food waste and 58% said they have reduced their weekly food spend since receiving a goodie bag.
We received some great feedback about the goodies, particularly the meal planner which many people found very useful. It goes to show that making very small changes can make a huge difference.
