Poole Town Ward

Poole Town Ward is located in the south of Poole and shares boundaries with Oakdale and Parkstone Wards. Poole Park and Baiter Park cover much of the south east of the ward. The Twin Sails Bridge, Poole’s second harbour crossing opened to the public in March 2012, is located in the west of the ward. The bridge will provide critical infrastructure for 26 hectares of brownfield land covering parts of Poole Town and Hamworthy East, one of the largest regeneration areas in the South West.

Key facts from the 2011 Census regarding this area include:

  • In 2011 the resident population of Poole Town Ward was 10,683 people with 5,025 households.

  • Poole Town Ward has on average a younger aged resident population than Poole with an average age of 41.7 compared to 42.1.

  • A lower proportion of residents in Poole Town Ward reported that they had ‘very good health’, with 43.2% compared to 46.5% in Poole.

  • Also this area had a greater proportion of its residents reporting that their day to day activities were limited by a long-term illness or disability, with 20.6% compared with 18.5% in Poole.

  • The ward is more ethnically diverse than Poole with 16.8% of residents in Poole Town Ward stating they were not ‘White British’. The largest BME group was ‘Other White’ at 7.4%.

  • Owner occupation in Poole Town Ward is lower than Poole overall. The proportion of residents living either in socially rented or privately rented accommodation is much higher than both Poole and England and Wales. One person households were more likely in this area.

  • This ward has a higher proportion of its households where no one could speak English as a main language.

  • The proportion of the economically active population aged 16-74 who are unemployed is higher in Poole Town Ward than in Poole. Self-employment levels are also lower in this area.
