General Election 2010

General Election - 6th May 2010.  Polling Stations opened between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm.  The Prime Minister announced that the Parliamentary (General) Election was to be held on Thursday 6th May.

Additionally, there was a local by-election on the same day for voters in Broadstone Ward to elect a Borough of Poole Councillor. 

13th April - We received the official writs, requiring the Returning Officer to hold the elections

13th April - Our printers started sending out Poll Cards; they were being delivered by Royal Mail over a period of a few days

15th April - The Notices of Election for the Poole and Mid-Dorset and North Poole Constituencies was published.  Nomination Papers were received by the Acting Returning Officer by appointment between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm until Tuesday 20th April.

20th April - Following the close of nominations, we published the Statements of Persons Nominated for the Poole and Mid Dorset and North Poole constituencies

27th April - The deadline for applications for Proxy Votes for the election passed


You need to have your name on the Electoral Register and also be a citizen of one of the following countries in order to be able to vote at the General Election.

  • Great Britain
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Cyprus
  • Malta
  • Commonwealth countries (if you have leave to enter or remain in the UK or do not require it)

(Citizens of other European Union countries are not able to vote in this election even if they have their names on the Electoral Register).

Here is the timescale of the main events leading up to Polling Day:

31 March

Official writ (formal written order) issued, requesting the election of a new Parliament

1 April

Start of delivery of Poll Cards

2 April (4:00 pm)

Publication of formal Notice of Election

9 April (4:00 pm)

Deadline for delivering nominations to the Returning Officer

9 April (4:00 pm)

Statement of Persons Nominated published

20 April

Last day for addition of names to the Electoral Register for the election

21 April (5:00 pm)

Last day for receipt of new Postal Vote applications for the election

24 April

Start of delivery of Postal Votes

28 April (5:00 pm)

Last day for receipt of Proxy Vote applications for the election

7 May (7:00 am to 10:00 pm)

Polling Day

7 May (5:00 pm)

Deadline for issue of emergency Proxy votes

8 May (after close of poll)

Counting of votes, followed by announcement of results
