Main functions of the unit

Growth and Infrastructure carries out a range of functions that help to shape the future of the Borough of Poole.

The main functions of the unit cover:

  • setting planning policy and overseeing its implementation. This involves the production of the statutory planning framework for Poole, including those plans and policies that make up the Local Development Framework. The team also promote the implementation of planning policy through the preparation of statutory and non-statutory guidance and participation in the development/regeneration process, and working with partners to provide a co-ordinated approach across South East Dorset.
  • development and implementation of the local economic development strategy and supporting the management of the Enterprise and Economy aspects of the Local Area Agreement. This area of the business is active in developing and maintaining good relations with the business community, promoting inward investment and responding to requests for assistance from business, as well as delivering projects to facilitate the improved performance of the local economy
  • urban design, conservation, tree preservation and environmental improvement initiatives
  • dealing with applications for planning permission and work on protected trees within the Borough of Poole
  • enforcement of planning law and monitoring planning conditions
  • dealing with the ever changing transport network, seeking to improve its design in a balanced way for all types of users while supporting public transport operators, providing for wider health, social care, education and voluntary transport needs
  • meeting its statutory responsibilities as the Local Highway Authority. Helping to develop council policy, build infrastructure, control the impact of growth in development, attract retail and facilitate local business activity
  • supporting the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership - running the "Connected Dorset" Theme Group and having input into the Local Strategic Partnership, the Health and Well Being Board, Poole Sustainable Environment Partnership, Older People's Strategy, Children and Young People's Plan, Carbon Management Programme Board, Safer Neighbourhood Teams, Customer and Employee First initiatives, Equality Impact Assessment and business continuity and emergency planning activities
  • promoting the sustainable use of transport, both for council business, staff travel to work, and for the wider population of Poole. We base our work on national transport policy, and through our active role in the councils own carbon management to help reduce the local carbon footprint
  • providing safe and affordable parking for those that work, live, shop, learn and plan across Poole.
