Canford Bridge - Traffic Flow and Diversions

Traffic Flow

Average daily traffic flows over the bridge are:

  • 17,000 vehicles per day including 70 HGVs
  • 245 pedestrian crossings
  • 84 cyclists crossing
  • Peak flow of 1700 vehicles per hour

Traffic Management

Work on the project will commence on 31 March and will initially require single way temporary traffic lights. In order to carry out the major repairs to stonework, a complete road closure will operate for 18 weeks from June to October.

Information and diversion signs for motorists of the works will be placed at strategic locations on the approaches to the bridge. Arrangements are also being made with bus operators to reschedule local services. A pedestrian link will be maintained at all times during the road closure.

A diversion route, agreed by ourselves, Dorset County Council, the Highways Agency and Dorset Police, will be introduced on the A31 west to Lake Gates and into Wimborne over Julian's Bridge.

The road will reopen in October with single way traffic signals in operation until the project is due to completed in December.

To summarise:

  • 31 March - 22 June. Bridge open with traffic signals.
  • 23 June - 24 October. Bridge closed, diversion route in place.
  • 25 October - 31 December. Bridge open with traffic signals.
