Poole’s Three Towns Travel Projects

Ashley Road

Project status: Completed

Consultation on the proposed improvement schemes ran from 15 July - 23 August 2013.  The results were discussed at Transportation Advisory Group who voted in favour of the proposals. They went to Full Council on 22 October 2013.  The four proposed schemes were approved. 

  • The second phase of works to the central area of Ashley Road were completed in May 2015 with a few finishing touches to be made in June 2015. 

  • Our thanks to everyone for their patience while the works took place. Ashley Road shops are open for business.

Poole Road including Bourne Valley Road Junction, St Aldhelm's Road and Lindsay Road

Project status: Complete

  • Improved pedestrian facilities including: 
    • footway resurfacing near Branksome Parade
    • a new toucan crossing on Lindsay Road
    • a new pedestrian phased crossing near Bourne Valley Road
    • a new informal pedestrian refuge crossing on Poole Road (near St Aldhelm's Road) 
    • a new informal raised crossing to slow traffic and encourage vehicles to let pedestrians cross on St Aldhelm's Road
  • Improved facilities for disabled people near Langley Road and Bourne Valley Road
  • Improved facilities for cyclists including a new toucan crossing on Lindsay Road and a bike lane on St Aldhelm's Road to enable cyclists to cross the road to resume their journey in the bike lane on Poole Road.
  • New and improved bus facilities including new bus shelters near Eagle Road and Langley Road.
  • Improved public realm near Langley Road.

Sea View

Project status: Complete

Sea View is a significant bus interchange servicing one of the main corridors between Poole and Bournemouth.

  • Improvements to bus facilities including level access to buses, new bus shelters and real-time bus information
  • Improved public realm / local
  • Simplify the road layout to improve congestion and make it easier for buses and cars to manoeuvre
  • Improvements to pedestrian crossings and to the view point
  • New cycle parking

Civic Centre & County Gates Gyratories 

Project status: Complete

  • LED (low energy) traffic signal improvements delivered on the gyratories

  • New cycle provision at Commercial Road bus link by the Civic Centre.

Poole Railway Station - Vanguard Road

Project status: Complete

  • New 20 min parking bays for motorists meeting passengers from trains
  • Additional blue badge holder parking under Towngate Bridge
  • Improved public realm / local
  • New cycle parking and signage
  • Improved pedestrian access to the railway station
  • Improved public realm 
  • Security CCTV for the subway
  • Improved bus stop facilities including level access onto buses

Shah of Persia

Project status: Complete

The Shah of Persia junction sees approximately 137,000 vehicles pass through it each day. It is a cross-roads of two major roads – the A35 and A348. The A35 is one of the main routes for the movement of people and goods across the Poole conurbation.

  • Improved pedestrian crossings with two additional signal crossings provided

  • Improved cycling facilities
