About Cigarette Butts

It is estimated that 122 tonnes of cigarette butts and smoking related litter is dropped every day in the UK.  This represents the most commonly found item of litter on the UK's streets.

Each cigarette butt can take up to 12 years to degrade and, now that most buildings do not allow smoking inside, the problem of discarded butts on entryways and public highways is increasing.

In 2007 we were successful in our application to work with Encams (Keep Britain Tidy campaigners) on a cigarette litter campaign.  We continue to hold education days, raising awareness that cigarette butts are litter.

What we are doing to tackle the problem

The Pride in Poole campaign looks to educate members of the public that cigarette butts are actually litter and they should not be discarded on the street. Where necessary formal enforcement action may be taken against individuals who drop their cigarette butts, this could involve issuing a fixed penalty notice or prosecution.
