Bournemouth & Poole Housing Market Area - Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA)

Purpose

As part of a government-led programme, all Councils are required to assess the amount of land available for housing development and produce a Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA). Assessments will provide the evidence base to support the delivery of sufficient land to meet the community's need for more homes by ensuring the managed delivery of sufficient land for housing.

Production on the Borough of Poole's SHLAA began in October 2007, following the production of the Government's final Practice Guidance, which can be viewed here Government Guidance.

The Practice Guidance recommends that Assessments be completed for whole Housing Market Areas (HMAs). All of the councils in the Bournemouth and Poole HMA (Bournemouth, Christchurch, East Dorset, North Dorset, Poole and Purbeck Councils), and Dorset County Council, have agreed to work together to produce separate Assessments, which will provide a comprehensive HMA-wide demonstration of land available for new housing.

The production of the Council's Assessment in 2007/08 was overseen by a Panel of local stakeholders which met on four occassions during the evidence gathering and production stages of the Assessment. This led to the production of the Council's SHLAA, May 2008. The main report and appendices can be viewed here.

Monitoring and Review

The SHLAA will be updated on an annual basis, to provide a rolling demonstration of the availability of deliverable and developable land for housing. The first SHLAA Update, based on residential monitoring undertaken in April 2008 has now been produced. This can be viewed here.

Please note the latest SHLAA Update provides the Council's most up-to-date demonstration of a five, ten and 15-year land supply, superseding the previous report.

Submission of New Sites

As the SHLAA will be updated annually, the Council continues to welcome the submission of land, which will be considered as part of the Assessment. If you would like to submit a site, please complete the SHLAA Form 2, see right, and return to the address below. Submitted sites will be assessed annually or when it is deemed necessary to comprehensively review the Council's SHLAA.
