Trees Management

Council owned trees

We will remove:

  • dead, dying and dangerous trees

  • damaged and dangerous limbs
  • limbs which are obscuring highway signs, traffic lights or lamps
  • limbs which are interfering with telephone lines, subject to confirmation from service provided

We will not remove:

  • branches or trees that overhang private property
  • branches or trees that affect views or interfere with TV reception
  • branches or trees affecting solar collection arrays
  • branches or trees that are dropping debris
  • branches or trees nearly touching buildings, walls and roofs
  • branches or trees that block light
  • branches or trees that are high in relation to nearby property
  • branches or carry out tree works next to or that interfere with electricity cables (contact Southern Electric on 0800 688 588 plantprotection@cadentgas.com)

You can carry out tree work or engage a contractor at your own expense provided that:

  • advance permission is granted where access is required on Borough of Poole land or a tree
  • the tree is not situated in a conservation area, or protected by a tree preservation order
  • work done is not detrimental to health or stability (please obtain advice from a qualified tree surgeon)
  • tree pruning work is carried out to an acceptable standard (British Standard Recommendations for Tree Work 3398:2010)
  • you notify us of the proposed work and commencement date
  • vegetation or branches are cut back within your boundary if the tree is less than 25 centimetres (10 inches) in diameter.
  • the tree has not been deliberately planted and is not a significant feature of the environment or contribution to the amenity

You must contact us on 01202 265275 if the tree is on or adjacent to:

  • Alexandra Park
  • Blake Dean Road open space
  • Branksome Chine or woods
  • Branksome recreation ground
  • Branksome Dene Chine
  • Broadstone recreation ground
  • Coy Pond and gardens
  • Flaghead Chine
  • Poole Park
  • Sopers Lane open space

Removal of branches larger than 25cm (10 inches) in diameter may not be desirable because:

  • the tree will be damaged by the removal of a large branch or all branches on the neighbouring property side
  • the remainder will be unsightly for the resident or neighbour and lead to a request to later fell the tree
  • there is a risk to residents safety if a major work is attempted

If a tree surgeon is employed to undertake tree surgery, they will need access to council land to climb the tree. In this case proposed works need to be agreed, have sight of the tree surgeon's public liability insurance and qualifications to undertake the work.

If you have concerns about one of our trees please contact Customer Services on 01202 261700. Please note that work is only considered on branches over 50mm (2 inches).

Privately owned tree with preservation order

A tree preservation order (TPO) is an order made by us to protect trees that are privately owned and make a significant contribution to the amenity of an area.Find out more Tree preservation order page.

Tree damage to property

If you believe a council owned tree is causing damage to your property and you want to make a claim, please write to Financial Services who will forward your claim to the borough's insurers. You need to provide as much information as possible and may be required to support your claim with an independent expert's report.
