Draft Environmental Statement

The Environmental Statement looks at the potential impact of the proposed second bridge on the environment and community - studies include navigation, contamination, traffic, social & wildlife impacts.

Consultation on the Draft Environmental Statement closed on 26 April 2004. The seven week programme included presentations at all Area Committee meetings and exhibitions at the Dolphin Shopping Centre and Hamworthy Library. We received approximately forty comments from a variety of organisations and individuals and are now in the process of reviewing all the consultation responses that were received.

In summary, the main concerns raised include the operation of a two lifting bridge system, the capacity of the basin between the two bridges and the impact of construction and dredging on the harbour and surrounding environment. As a result the Council will seek to address and alleviate concerns which will include amending and updating the Environmental Statement, in preparation for the submission of the Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) application to the Government which occured on 29th November 2004, to build the core scheme including the Twin Sails Bridge.
