Borough of Poole win award for supporting small businesses

Borough of Poole has again been acknowledged, by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), as one of the south’s best boroughs in which to run a small business.

The council was presented with an award for the Most Innovative Small Business Friendly Project, in the eighth annual Local Small Business Friendly Awards 2016.

The award was presented for council support in the creation of the Dorset Engineering & Manufacturing Cluster (Dorset EMC), which has developed into a successful network of 300+ businesses across engineering and manufacturing businesses in Dorset. The Cluster provides regular events, workshops, and seminars for members. It also provides access to business support and funding though partner organisations – and the opportunity to influence how the sector expands as a whole.

The council was also Highly Commended in the Best All Round Small Business Friendly category, with the awards presented by the former Shadow Business Secretary and ex-MP for Southampton Itchen, John Denham.

Receiving the awards, Cllr Mohan Iyengar, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Borough of Poole, said: “Small businesses are critical to the vibrancy and overall health of Poole’s economy. The council has supported such businesses for many years and I’m glad this has been recognised through these awards. An interesting and somewhat challenging time lies ahead for many of our businesses, but we look forward to working with our entrepreneurs and making the most of the opportunities available."

Neil Eames, Development Manager for Dorset, Hampshire and Isle of Wight, said: “These awards acknowledge councils who are proactively supporting local micro and small business. We are delighted to recognise the significant work undertaken by Borough of Poole and we are keen to help promote such examples of best practice to all councils, ultimately to help support our local business community. The FSB looks to the region’s local authorities to help create the environment for small businesses to survive and thrive, and we look forward to continuing working with Borough of Poole and other councils to keep this momentum going.”
