Councillors support affordable housing development

Borough of Poole's councillors have unanimously shown support for a new housing scheme to be built on the former Gravel Hill police station site.

Councillors unanimously approved a total budget of £11.83m to deliver 62 new flats on the Canford Heath Road site. This joint development between Borough of Poole and Poole Housing Partnership is made up of 56 affordable homes and six specialist homes.

Cllr Karen Rampton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Housing and Community Services, Borough of Poole, said: "The provision of affordable housing is one of the Council's key priorities and this scheme will provide 62 much needed properties.

"I am pleased that cross-party Members supported this excellent development. This scheme will be particularly significant for those who have a disability for whom securing affordable and appropriate accommodation to meet their needs is a challenge."

Planning permission for the site was approved by the Council's Planning Committee in April and Full Council approved that a conditional letter is issued to the Council's preferred bidder for the build contract.

Cllr Sean Gabriel, Ward Councillor for Canford Heath West, Borough of Poole, said: "I am pleased this development will be able to provide much needed housing for local people. The six units supporting independent living for disabled people is especially welcome."

It is anticipated that work will start on site in March 2017 with the homes being completed in September 2018.
