Helping communities be prepared for emergencies

Borough of Poole is hosting its first ever Community Resilience Day to help ensure communities are better prepared for and able to recover from, emergencies and disruptions such as severe weather like flooding, snow and ice.

The aim is to support and encourage individuals and communities to be more self-reliant during emergencies, enabling the council to focus on those areas and people in greatest need.

To help local communities understand the support and advice available to them, various organisations will be present including the Environment Agency, British Red Cross, Worldwide Veterinary Service, RNLI, Fire Service, Police and Scottish and Southern Energy. In addition staff from the council will also be available to help explain their role in an emergency or disruption.

Councillor Les Burden, Chairman of the Emergency Committee, Borough of Poole, said: “An emergency can happen at any time so we are keen to ensure people are aware of how to protect themselves and their property. By following a few simple steps residents can be better prepared to cope with the disruptions that affect them and their family's daily life and well-being. We would encourage everyone to attend this event.”

The event will take place at Hamworthy Community Library on Wednesday 18 May and local people can drop in at any time between 8am and 5pm. It is being sponsored by Morrish Builders, a successful regional and commercial property developer based in Poole, with over 60 years’ experience in building quality homes across the Southern counties.

Steven and David Morrish, Joint Managing Directors at Morrish Builders, said: “The community is always placed at the heart of every development we undertake, so we are delighted to be sponsoring this local event which focuses on safe-guarding the community. Health and safety features are always included in our properties, such as smoke alarms and security alarms.”

If successful, Borough of Poole will look to hold similar events throughout Poole in the future.
