New community hub at Alexandra Park

Borough of Poole is pleased to confirm that Harbour Challenge will be moving to the site of the former Alexandra Park Bowls Club to open a community hub.

Harbour Challenge, a registered charity, provides leisure and recreation activities, and will be taking the tenancy of the facilities from the end of April 2016. Outdoor activities will include treasure hunts, orienteering and archery. They will also run after school, holiday and Saturday clubs for children and young people along with a classroom space for first aid, Royal Yachting association and BTEC courses.

The pavilion will also become the base for the charity Out & About to run a day centre for adults with disabilities and learning difficulties. The facility will initially be open three days a week, which may expand according to demand including evenings.

Cllr Mohan Iyengar, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure, Borough of Poole, said; “It’s good news that a local provider will be offering recreation activities from this site to the community. We are keen to work with Harbour Challenge so that local people can make the most of the wonderful facilities and services they have on their doorstep."

Chris Hurlock, Centre Principal for Harbour Challenge, said: “Following our successful takeover of the Borough’s Outdoor Education Centre in Hamworthy Park in 2014, we are delighted to be given the opportunity to replicate this success at Alexandra Park for the benefit of the local community and the people of Poole in general."

Harbour Challenge is holding two open evenings on Tuesday 26 and Thursday 28 April at the pavilion for local residents to come and talk to staff about the plans and learn more about the Harbour Challenge community hub. Doors open at 6.45pm with a run down of the plans at 7.15pm, followed by a question and answer session.

Notes to Editor:

Following the closure of Alexandra Park Bowls Club in October, Borough of Poole completed a procurement exercise to once again establish the facility as a leisure facility for the people of Poole.
