Borough of Poole launches ‘new to you’ service

Borough of Poole will be launching its ‘new to you’ service at the pop-up shop on Tuesday 2 June 2015.

The initiative aims to give everyday items, which have been taken to the borough’s Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC), a new lease of life.

Over a two-week period, Poole’s innovative pop-up shop will showcase the quality and variety of items that are being thrown away. All items will be suitable for reuse and include furniture, toys, games, ceramics, sports equipment, books, records as well as paintings and sculptures. All items can be purchased at reasonable prices.

The pop-up shop which can be found at 58 High Street will be open Monday - Saturday between 9.30am to 5pm until Saturday 13 June.

Councillor John Rampton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Consumer Protection Services, Borough of Poole, said: “Many items thrown away are in very good condition and some are still in their original packaging. Rather than sending these perfectly good items to landfill, which is expensive to us as taxpayers, it would be far better for local people to be given the opportunity to make use of them.

“We hope as many people as possible will visit the pop-up shop and see for themselves the items available. You never know you may even be able to bag a bargain.”

The council has a duty to find disposal routes for all of the waste it collects and for every tonne of waste that is reused, the council will save over £100 in disposal costs.

Any money taken as a result of the reuse initiative will go towards reducing the council’s waste disposal costs which will help protect key council services such as support to vulnerable members of the community.
