Food for thought at Oakdale Library

As part of this year’s World Health Day campaign, environmental health officers from the Borough of Poole will be unveiling a display dedicated to food hygiene and safety at Oakdale Library on Friday 27 March. Information will be available to view on selected days until Wednesday 8 April, with residents able to take away leaflets containing top tips for preventing food poisoning.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) marks World Health Day on 7 April 2015. This year’s theme is ‘how safe is your food?’, encouraging people to make sure the food on their plate is safe to eat.

Cllr Xena Dion, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for a Prosperous and Sustainable Poole, Borough of Poole, said: “Most people make a full recovery from food poisoning, but in a few cases it can be far more serious. There are several easy measures that can be taken to protect you and your family, and it’s great to see the library being used to help promote these to the local community as part of World Health Day.”

There are over a million cases of food poisoning in the UK each year, with 20,000 hospitalisations and 500 deaths with cost the economy £1.5 billion. Unsafe food is linked to the deaths of an estimated 2 million people annually, which the WHO is aiming to address through this year’s World Health Day campaign.

The display can be viewed at Oakdale Library on the following dates:

  • Friday 27 March – 10am to 5pm
  • Saturday 28 March – 10am to 1pm
  • Monday 30 March – 10am to 6pm
  • Tuesday 31 March – 10am to 5pm
  • Wednesday 1 April – 10am to 5pm
  • Saturday 4 April – 10am to 1pm
  • Tuesday 7 April (World Health Day) – 10am to 5pm
  • Wednesday 8 April – 10am to 5pm

If you’re cooking for family and friends, be sure to stick to the WHO’s Five Keys to Safer Food when handling and preparing food:

  • Keep clean - make sure the food you eat is prepared and kept in good hygienic conditions
  • Separate raw and cooked food - when shopping, keep raw meat, poultry, fish and shellfish away from other foods and use separate bags for transportation. Store raw food on separate shelves in the fridge
  • Cook thoroughly – take particular care when preparing food for pregnant women, children, the elderly or those with a weakened immune system
  • Cook food at safe temperatures - avoid overcooking when frying, grilling or baking foods as this may produce toxic chemicals
  • Use safe water and raw materials - in your kitchen, store chemical products in a safe place and do not re-use containers that were used to store chemicals to store food
