The Inspired by 2012 Health and Wellbeing Legacy Fund is now open for applications from organisations in Poole. The latest round of funds, worth a total of £200,000, is earmarked for organisations wanting to improve the physical or mental health of people across Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset, with 40 community projects already having benefitted from funds worth almost £500,000 since October 2014.

Any scheme which could have a positive impact on the local community can apply to the Health and Wellbeing Boards. Applications are open until 31 July, with decisions to be made by the end of September 2015.

Priority for funding will be given to projects designed to help vulnerable people or marginalised communities, tackle health inequalities, inspire people towards a healthier lifestyle and have a lasting legacy.

This year’s successful bidders so far include Dorset Destroyers wheelchair rugby club, who will use the funding to help establish the only club of its kind in Dorset.

Nick Coombs, Chairman, said: “The funds will make a massive difference to the club. We already have huge demand from wheelchair users to join the club but specialist chairs are required as it can get very physical. This funding enables us to increase our stock and capacity to provide what is proving to be a life changing activity for many of our members.”

Faithworks Wessex will use the funds to befriend, support and reconnect isolated older people in two of the most deprived areas of Poole.

Alistair Doxat-Purser; Chief Executive, said: “The cooking, inter-generational and volunteering activities will help to mitigate loneliness and isolation, increase confidence and self-esteem, and improve physical and mental health in this age group - in summary it will renew their hope in life.”
