Solar panels to be installed at Poole’s Civic Centre

Work to install an array of solar panels on the roof of the staff car park at Poole’s Civic Centre is now underway.

The project, which is the result of months of work by Borough of Poole’s Carbon Management Programme and Transportation service, is being managed and delivered by Poole Housing Partnership. Over 500 solar panels will be fitted to a steel framework, the first pieces of which will be lifted into place this weekend.

Once complete, it is estimated that the panels will provide around 13% of the Civic Centre’s electricity, as well as helping to achieve a gross saving of more than £24,000 per year and a carbon reduction of more than 51 tonnes.

Work will now continue over the coming weeks, and is due to be completed by the end of March.

Cllr Ian Potter, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Carbon Management, Borough of Poole, said: “This innovative project is set to help us to significantly reduce our energy consumption at the Civic Centre, as well as supporting the Government’s Solar Hubs agenda, which has called for large scale solar installations on public buildings. A great deal of hard word has gone into making this project a reality, and we are pleased to see this come to fruition.”
