Poole bids for £13.5 million for street lighting and highways maintenance

Borough of Poole has submitted two bids, totalling £13.5 million of funding, to support the borough’s Street Lighting Replacement and Highways Maintenance programmes over the next three years.

The bids have been made to the Department for Transport (DfT) and are for additional maintenance funding from the Local Maintenance Challenge Fund.

£8 million has been bid for to contribute to the borough’s £11.2 million street lighting LED replacement programme.

The Highways Maintenance bid is for £5.5 million to contribute to a £6.8 million programme to enable the council to resurface 13 kilometres (approximately 8 miles) of highway and footways throughout the borough.

The council's current funding levels only enables 0.7% to 1% of Poole's road network to be resurfaced each year.

Councillor Ian Potter, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Borough of Poole, said: “If successful, this will help the council to improve the condition of the highways in Poole over the next three years. Going forward, it will also help to reduce the amount of expensive patching and pothole repairs that the council has to carry out.”

It is anticipated that the DfT will announce successful applications during March 2015.
