Poole Open Winners exhibit at Poole Museum

Poole Museum is delighted to showcase a new exhibition of work by winning artists Kerry Fairclough and Jason Miller, joint first prize-winners of the Poole Open Exhibition.

The Poole Open Exhibition was an open arts competition which aimed to highlight the work of artists, designers and makers working in all media. UK-based artists aged 16 years and over were asked to submit work that responded to any of the key themes of the collections in Poole Museum. Over 200 works were put forward to the selection panel, which included Alison Bevan, Director of the Royal West of England Academy. From this, works by 67 artists were chosen for the exhibition and were displayed at Poole Museum in May 2014.

In deciding on Kerry and Jason as joint winners, the judges were particularly impressed by the intensity of connection with the world around them expressed in both artists’ paintings. In each case, despite their very different styles, this was achieved with excellent craft skills. As part of their prize they were awarded the opportunity to display their work in the museum’s temporary exhibition galleries.

Kerry Fairclough’s intimate paintings document her surroundings and the local scene. The series of work on display in this new exhibition explores the idea of the weather and the obsession that, as a nation, we seem to have with it.

Jason Miller’s preferred working materials are watercolour and gouache on heavy paper and acrylic on canvas or sculpted wooden panels. In the works on display he explores light and colour in a series of abstract pieces, picking up the emotional feel for his art from the local area.

Michael Spender, Museum Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "It’s wonderful to be able to see contemporary artwork that has been inspired by the artists’ local surroundings and to celebrate the success of the Poole Open once again.”

The free exhibition will run from Friday 8 January until Sunday 6 March. Opening times are Tuesdays – Saturdays, 10am – 4pm and Sundays 12 noon – 4pm. Closed on Mondays.
