Develop journalism skills with new course at Poole Library

A new programme giving local people who are long-term unemployed or homeless the opportunity to learn journalism and photography skills will begin at Poole Central Library next month.

Run by communications agency Poached Creative, the course will be a first for the region, following a positive response to a programme in London which has been running for the past 18 months.

Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, it is designed to help provide new opportunities for people who are homeless or long-term unemployed. Over 45 people have received similar training so far, most of whom have gone on to paid employment, volunteering positions or further education.

Kevin McErlane, Head of Culture and Community Learning, Borough of Poole, said: “We are very pleased to be working alongside Poached Creative on this innovative project, which represents a great deal of hard work on both sides. Learning a new skill is a fantastic way to help improve your prospects, and the new course will help us to provide further skills and training to the residents of Poole.”

Individuals and local companies are now being invited to refer candidates that fit the criteria, or apply themselves directly by contacting Poached Creative. All candidates must be long-term unemployed or homeless, and have a passion for writing or photography.

Applicants will be invited to an interview after which successful candidates will undergo a training programme in either journalism or photography. Following the training period, they will be given the opportunity to publish their work online and in print, and their work will also feature on the course training blog, enabling them to build a personal portfolio which will hopefully prove useful for a future career.

The programme is expected to run for six weeks from 14 May - 19 June 2015, every Thursday and Friday at Poole Central Library.

Potential trainees are asked to email a short statement on why they are interested in taking part and a CV (if available) to michelle@poachedcreative.com
