Housing list residents across Dorset urged to re-apply

Residents currently on the housing lists in Borough of Poole; North Dorset District Council; Purbeck District Council; West Dorset District Council; or Weymouth & Portland Borough Council are being asked to reapply to the housing registers.

This is because the councils, which form the Dorset Choice Based Lettings Partnership, have reviewed the policies which set out how social housing is allocated.

Registration takes place from 29 September until 11 November 2014, and the new allocation policy will take effect from 17 December 2014.

Councils are writing to all applicants currently on the housing register and asking them to re-register before the 11 November deadline.

Residents who do not re-register by 5pm on 11 November 2014 will no longer be on the housing register.

The changes that affect all the councils which form the partnership are:

  • A requirement for a local connection to the authority area being applied to in order to be able to remain on or join the register
  • Applicants that are deemed to have the financial means to address their housing situation will be unable to remain on or join the register
  • Applicants who are adequately housed will no longer be able to remain on or join the register

In addition to these changes, each of the partners has made their own specific changes to local connection rules, banding reasons and bedroom size calculations.

Residents who no longer qualify for a place on the register will still be able to access help and support including assistance with referrals to other housing options or support to keep people in their homes.  

Cllr Karen Rampton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Housing and Housing Advice, Borough of Poole, said: “These changes bring Poole’s scheme in line with national policy and will allow all councils within the partnership to help those with the highest levels of housing need. I would urge all residents who are currently on Borough of Poole’s housing list to re-register before the deadline so that they can continue to be considered for housing available on the Dorset Home Choice scheme.”

Residents will need to complete the registration form online at www.dorsethomechoice.org from 29 September. Residents who do not have internet access at home will be able to access the website from public computers at local libraries and council offices. If they are an existing tenant of a social landlord, they may be able to access computer facilities at their social landlord’s offices.
