Traffic Signals Upgrade At Wimborne Road Junction Reaches Next Stage

Works to upgrade the traffic signals at the Wimborne Road junction with Dorchester Road and Vicarage Road is progressing well and the contractor is now moving to the next phase of the works programme.

The old traffic signals will be turned off on Tuesday 20 May at 9.30am to enable the signal poles, which have suffered significant corrosion over the years, to be replaced. This phase of the works will take a period of four weeks and then the new traffic signals control equipment will be installed and working by 20 June 2014.

During this period of refurbishment multi phase temporary signals will be used for traffic control, with temporary pedestrian crossing facilities for the existing controlled crossing points. There is likely to be additional congestion, particularly at peak times causing some disruption to journeys. Drivers are encouraged to use an alternative route whilst this phase of works is being carried out.

Councillor Ian Potter, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Borough of Poole, said: "The works are now at a stage in the process where temporary lights are required, this is likely to cause some congestion and we would like to thank local residents and road users for their understanding and patience while improvements to this busy junction are carried out."

Councillor Peter Adams, Ward Member for Oakdale, Borough of Poole, said: "I am delighted that after so many years this junction is going to be improved in terms of safety and accessibility. It will make a real difference to those people who use this junction on a regular basis and is a step in the right direction."

The upgraded signals will provide a number of additional benefits to road users including:

*  being more responsive to fluctuation in traffic flows throughout the day

*  improved synchronisation with the signals at the New Inn

*  enhanced benefits for cyclists and improved facilities for pedestrians with a new pedestrian facility to cross Vicarage Road

The works are programmed to be completed by 20 June.
