Young people takeover Poole Museum

Young people from Poole became the public face of Poole Museum when they took over this popular attraction for a day.

Each year young people are invited to apply to take part in the scheme at Poole Museum, which is part of the National Takeover Day initiative. The scheme provides young people with the opportunity to experience the world of work in a supportive environment including being involved in decision-making during the day. Companies also benefit from the experience as they gain a fresh perspective on what they do.

The number of applications received by Poole Museum was at an unprecedented high from young people across the borough. Six young people, between the ages of 11 and 14 years old, were chosen to carry out six training sessions as well as the takeover day itself.

The young people covered all the public facing roles including staffing the front desk, answering local history enquiries, taking tours and patrolling the Museum. This year the young people also had lunch with Michael Spender, Museum and Arts Manager, Borough of Poole, and grilled him about his role.

The day was a tremendous success and the young people involved enjoyed it so much they asked if they could do it all again next year.

Michael Spender said: “It was fantastic to see the young people in action. They had a lot to learn in the run up to the day, but were very professional and capable. Our visitors were very impressed."

Councillor Xena Dion, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for a Prosperous and Sustainable Poole, Borough of Poole, said: "We are keen to support initiatives that encourage young people to become actively involved in their communities. The National Takeover Day provides them with a unique and meaningful experience working with local organisations to learn new skills which will stand them in good stead for the future. We would encourage both employers and young people to consider getting involved in this scheme next year."

Takeover Day is part of a National initiative run by the Children’s Commissioner and supported in museums by the organisation, Kids in Museums. Takeover Day at Poole Museum was documented on the project blog www.poolemuseum.com/takeover2014.
