Proposed 20mph zones for Branksome, Parkstone and Penn Hill

Local people are being invited to give their views on proposals to implement five new 20mph zones in densely populated residential areas of Branksome, Parkstone and Penn Hill next year.

The proposals follow the introduction of a 20mph zone in Newtown, in March 2014, Poole’s trial area.

The zones are being proposed following simplified guidance from the Department for Transport. Councils are being asked to consider implementing more 20mph zones in residential areas (where traffic is already travelling near this speed) without the need for physical measures such as chicanes or humps.

The proposed areas being considered include:

• Courthill zone
• Cromer zone
• Danecourt zone
• Heatherlands zone
• Salterns zone

People can respond in writing to the Traffic Regulation Orders which will be advertised in their roads on lamp posts. Alternatively local people can share their views about their feelings on road safety in their areas by completing the on-line survey form available at www.boroughofpoole.com/roadsafety.

Cllr Ian Potter, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Borough of Poole, said: "The introduction of 20mph zones aims to make streets in densely populated residential areas safer, quieter, cleaner and more pedestrian friendly. The 20mph speed limits should help improve the safety and quality of life for local people by promoting more considerate driving. In time, this should encourage more of us to make greater use of our streets for walking, cycling, playing or just socialising.”

20mph road signs at the entry points into the speed zone will be used together with 'roundels' or circles painted on the road.
