Continuing Improvements To Ashley Road

Works to improve pedestrian, cycling and traffic facilities at busy junctions in Poole are progressing well.

The work, part of a wider improvement programme for Ashley Road, has initially been centred on the Mansfield Road/Ashley Road junction. The next phase of the rolling programme of works started this week on the Richmond Road/Ashley Road junction. Like Mansfield Road, the work includes:

*   renewing kerb lines together with carriageway and footpath surfacing to make crossing easier for disabled people and those with buggies or pushchairs;

*   improving cycling facilities at the junction;

*   replacing traffic signals, which have come to the end of their working life, with low voltage and energy efficient equipment;

*   removing the existing banned left turn for vehicles from Churchill Road into Ashley Road.

To ensure works can be completed as quickly as possible, access to Churchill Road is restricted to one way traffic for the duration of the scheme, scheduled to take up to three months. This enables motorists to turn into Churchill Road from Ashley Road (but restricts access to Ashley Road from Churchill Road).

Towards the end of the works at Richmond Road, temporary signals will be used to allow the installation of the new traffic signals and to carry out re-surfacing works at the junction. To enable the re-surfacing to take place, a closure of the side roads (Churchill and Richmond Road) with Ashley Road will be required for a few days. Signs will be in place to advise motorists and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Julian McLaughlin, Head of Transportation Services, Borough of Poole, said: "These works are moving on at a pace and local people should soon see some initial improvements to Ashley Road. Once Richmond Road is completed we are taking the opportunity while we are on site to carry out additional re-surfacing on other parts of Ashley Road, from Mansfield Road towards Jubilee Road. We recognise that there will be some disruption to road users during the next phase of works and would like to thank everyone for their patience while they are carried out."

Further works at key locations along Ashley Road will be undertaken in Autumn 2014 in the Central Area (between Jubilee Road and Albert Road).

The total improvement works costing approximately £1 million are part of the Three Towns Travel project to improve sustainable travel between Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch.
