Sing for joy for free

Poole’s newest community choir for older people is inviting local residents aged 55 and over to enjoy a free taster session.

Sing Together has been set up by Borough of Poole Arts Service to encourage older people to boost their health and wellbeing through group singing. Weekly sessions normally cost £3, however to celebrate Older People’s Day organisers are inviting potential new members to take part in two taster sessions for free.

Cllr Judy Butt, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Public Engagement and Participation, Borough of Poole, said: "Everyone likes to get something for free and these taster sessions offer a perfect opportunity to try something new. Whether you have the voice of an angel or you're more of a backing singer everyone is welcome to come along, have a singsong and make some new friends."

The choir started in June and has been described by members as ‘refreshing’ and ‘fun’, with others reporting that they had gained confidence and friendship.

Anna Shiels, Arts Programme Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "Singing is so good for you. It’s great exercise for your lungs and singing with others as part of a group can be really uplifting.

"It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced singer or if you have never sung before, everyone is welcome. Singing in a supportive group like this can be a great way to build confidence, meet new people and above all have fun."

Sing Together is the latest in a series of creative arts projects aimed at encouraging older people to live healthier and happier lives. Borough of Poole set up it’s first older people’s choir, Zing! in 2008, which now boasts around 40 members. Other projects for older people include a successful programme of Tea Dances, Stretch ‘n’ Balance, a gentle exercise and dance class for older people, and a new Carers’ Choir.

Sing Together takes place on Thursday mornings, 10.30 – 11.30am at Bob Hann House, Shilitto Road, Parkstone. Sessions normally cost £3 a week but free taster sessions are being offered on 3 and 10 October.
