Mayor's Civic Reception for Poole Pirates

The Mayor of Poole formally congratulated Poole Coastal Aluminium Pirates on their success this season during a ceremony held yesterday.

The team triumphed against the odds with a fantastic victory against Birmingham in the Elite League. Following a difficult start to the season, and despite being without captain Chris Holder for the majority of the season, the Pirates showed tremendous team spirit and came out on top. They were invited to meet the Mayor, Cllr Philip Eades, in his parlour where he spoke to team members about their recent triumph. They also met with the Leader of the Council, Cllr Elaine Atkinson and Chief Executive, John McBride.

Following a short speech by the Mayor, the Speedway riders were presented with a beautifully inscribed commemorative Poole Pottery plate in the Council Chamber where staff and Members celebrated their fantastic season.

Cllr Philip Eades, Mayor of Poole, Borough of Poole, said: "Despite experiencing some stormy seas this season, the Poole Pirates never gave up and it was fantastic to welcome the team here to the Civic Centre today. The success of the team despite injuries to Darcy Ward and Chris Holder is a true testament to the fantastic team spirit that Matt Ford and Neil Middleditch continue to inspire among the riders and their achievements are a credit to our town.

"I am thrilled to celebrate the achievements of the Poole Pirates with council staff, Poole Pirates management, promoters, sponsors and of course most importantly the riders themselves.

"Congratulations on another title winning season and long may your success continue."

Cllr Elaine Atkinson, Leader of the Council, Borough of Poole, said: "The Poole Pirates have once again had a successful season and made everyone in Poole extremely proud. The team are a tremendous asset to the town and I look forward to seeing what they can accomplish next year. Last month we welcomed thousands of people to Poole Quay to enjoy the fantastic Rallye Sunseeker event and now we can celebrate the wonderful achievements of our world class speedway team."

Matt Ford, owner and promoter of Poole Pirates, said: "I’d like to thank the Mayor for inviting us here and for the council’s support. We are immensely proud that we managed to overcome some very bad injuries to key team members and it really is a credit to the fantastic team spirit that we've had such a successful season."
