The Poole Drawing Open Exhibition will be launched on Wednesday October 1 at 6.30pm at the Lighthouse, Poole Centre for the Arts.
Drawn to Poole is the first large scale Poole Open Art Exhibition for more than a generation and is free to the public. Focused on drawing, it aims to reveal and celebrate the incredible variety of ways people see, think, interpret and respond to the world around them.
The exhibition aims to celebrate different cultural styles and drawing traditions to illustrate the many ways people use drawing to impart knowledge, form inventions, solve problems and communicate ideas and beliefs.
Drawn to Poole is a partnership between Borough of Poole's Arts Development Unit and The Study Gallery of Modern Art
. The initiative is designed to encourage people of all ages and levels of ability to participate in art and drawing.
A panel of accomplished artists including John Bowen, Tony Kerrins and Fiona Robinson have selected the exhibition pieces.
The work on display also features original drawings and annotated sketchbooks that use codes, symbols and diagrams that are specific to subjects and professions including design, engineering, architecture, cartography and science. Also on display will be drawings by fine artists, calligraphers and printers.
Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for residents and visitors to learn about the different styles of drawing used by different cultures and traditions. The exhibition also provides a great opportunity to celebrate work by local artists and also to support and nurture future talent."
Marianne Scahill, Arts in the Community Officer said: "This is a key moment in the development of Poole as a centre for creative practice. With over 200 entries, Drawn to Poole highlights the high quality of artists and work being made here today. I encourage everyone to visit the Lighthouse and Study Gallery to see this inaugural Open exhibition, and to enjoy the excellent works on display."
Drawing events and family activities will take place at The Study Gallery of Modern Art Poole during the exhibition where a specially formed changing display of the different entries received will take place.
The exhibition is free entry and will run at the Lighthouse from 1 October - 1 December 2008 and is open between 10am and 5pm daily.
