Redevelopment of Fourways Day Centre

Borough of Poole is to consider fresh opportunities for the redevelopment of Fourways Day Centre following a review of current proposals.

The council is committed to building a new well-being centre at the existing Fourways site on Constitution Hill to provide better care facilities for disabled people in Poole. The plans have included the new well-being centre and a mix of private and affordable housing.

The council has been working in the recent months to appoint a developer with a view to starting work on the building project this Autumn. A positive response was received from a number of developers and the council was at the advanced stages of appointing a developer partner for the project.

However, due to changing conditions in the national housing market, potential developers who were negotiating with the council have now withdrawn their interest in the project.

Cllr Brian Leverett, Leader of the Council, said: "The council remains committed to its scheme to build a new well-being centre and improving services for people in our community. We had hoped to start work on the redevelopment at the earliest opportunity this Autumn. The decision by potential developers to withdraw their interest at this stage is disappointing and, inevitably, it will result in a delay to the council's original plans.

"We will now explore the options available to the council to ensure the project progresses with the best possible outcome for the people who use Fourways. The council will do all it can to minimise the delay in delivering a new well-being centre."

Day care services will continue to operate at Fourways until a clear timetable is in place to select a developer and start building work. Once the council is a position to progress the scheme, it is anticipated that existing day care services will relocate to temporary accommodation at Whitecliff Recreation Ground as planned.

People using the Fourways Day Centre, along with carers and staff, will continue to be kept informed of the council's progress on the redevelopment proposals.
