A scheme encouraging Poole residents to rediscover the joys of reading has been a big hit with participants of the Six Book Challenge
.
Starting in January, more than 100 adults chose to take part in the national scheme sponsored by Costa Book Awards
aimed at encouraging developing readers to build their reading stamina and experience by reading six books in five months.
The first 50 challengers who completed the task were presented with a certificate at a ceremony during Adult Learners' Week
last month and have been entered into a national prize draw to win an all expenses paid trip for two to see a West End show.
Poole Libraries, Poole Adult Learning and Bournemouth and Poole College
have all been involved with the challenge locally and are delighted with the take up.
Jenny Oliver, Reading and Learning Librarian, Borough of Poole, said: "We have had a lot of positive feedback from the participants who have completed the challenge so far, most of whom have found it has really helped improve their reading skills and confidence. The variety of the books they read was fantastic and really got people moving away from their comfort zones and into newer areas."
For those with the reading bug, there are a host of events coming up in Poole Libraries to celebrate the National Year of Reading 2008
. These include book swops, a limerick competition and another reading challenge in August. Locally based author Imogen Parker will also be involved in some of the events.
