Borough of Poole Help Beat the BBQ Blues

Borough of Poole's Environmental and Consumer Protection Services will be helping residents prepare for BBQ season as part of National Food Safety Week link will open in new window.

Environmental health officers will be at the Dolphin Shopping Centre link will open in new window on Wednesday 11 June offering advice and information about basic food hygiene, in particular promoting the four Cs of food safety link will open in new window: cleanliness, cooking, chilling and cross-contamination.

Throughout the week, they will be delivering educational resource packs to schools across Poole, which will include food safety exercises and every day useful hints promoting food safety and this year's theme 'Germ Watch link will open in new window.'

In 2007/08, environmental health officers received notification of 338 cases of food poisoning effecting Poole residents - a high number of which typically happen in the summer months.

Cllr Don Collier, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: " BBQs are great fun and very popular but can easily be ruined by contaminating or not cooking food properly. With this in mind, it is particularly important to follow simple rules when preparing food. Keeping work surfaces and dishcloths clean, washing your hands, keeping raw meat away from other products, chilling appropriate food and cooking items thoroughly are just some of the hints and tips that environmental health officers will be providing, ensuring everyone has a great summer."
