Council and Harbour Commissioners Join Forces to Improve Bridge Approach

Work began today to improve the road alignment from both directions onto Poole Bridge in a joint project between Borough of Poole and Poole Harbour Commissioners.

The work will improve forward visibility for drivers of large vehicles, helping to overcome congestion problems, which occur when two vehicles are unable to pass each other on the bridge.

There will be little impact on drivers and the bridge will still be in full use with no additional congestion expected.

The improvements include; moving kerbs back, reducing the size of traffic islands and general improvements to the access to and from the port, particularly for lorry drivers.

Port symbols will be painted on the road surface to lead ferry users to the port and additional signage will be implemented as part of the project.

Councillor Mike White, Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Borough of Poole said, " Clearly the Council and the Poole Harbour Commissioners have a common interest in reducing congestion caused by large vehicles on the bridge. We are happy to be working with the Harbour Commission to provide appropriate improvements."

Jim Stewart, Chief Executive of Poole Harbour Commissioners, said, "Poole Harbour Commissioners are pleased to assist the Borough of Poole in this project which will improve traffic conditions for Poole residents, the port and other businesses based in Hamworthy. Whilst it is not the solution to all of Poole's traffic problems, it is a sign of our commitment to our customers and stakeholders and will improve access to and from the port."

The project for the Poole side of the bridge will take approximately two weeks, with work beginning on the Hamworthy side in June.

Borough of Poole and Poole Harbour Commissioners are jointly funding the cost of the scheme.
