Cllr Brian Leverett, Leader of the Council, has paid tribute to Cllr Hillman on behalf of all members and staff of Borough of Poole.

Cllr Leverett said: "Mary was an inspiration to others. As a fellow councilor once said, 'she was a human dynamo, a great friend and a truly professional councillor'. She was deeply committed to the principles of fairness in all sections of our community. Her efforts touched the lives of so many people who may not even be aware of what she had done for them.

"Mary always fought for the best interests of those she represented and pursued individual's problems until they were resolved. Mary was a very much respected and loved member of the Council and of the community she represented with such commitment and dedication. She will be greatly missed."

John McBride, Chief Executive of Borough of Poole, said: "Mary was an excellent councillor and will be sadly missed. Mary had a heart for people who are vulnerable and disadvantaged and was able to give these people a voice through her role as a Cabinet Portfolio Holder. Mary was keen to make a difference in practical ways and was very skilled at getting alongside people and listening to their concerns."

A civic funeral is to be held for Cllr Hillman on Friday April 4. The service will commence at 3:30pm at St. James' Church, Church Street, Poole. The service will be followed by a committal at Poole Crematorium for family and close friends only.

Cllr Leverett will assume Cllr Hillman's duties as Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Equalities, Social Inclusion and Active Communities on a temporary basis until arrangements are made to appoint a replacement. A by-election for the Branksome East ward will be held at a date to be confirmed.
