Poole Shopmobility
has secured additional funding from Borough of Poole to provide their mobile scooter service for six days a week in the run-up to Christmas.
The extended service will operate between November 19 and December 24, Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm (closing at 12 noonon Christmas Eve).
Poole Shopmobility provides mobility equipment, including mobile scooters and powered wheelchairs, to people who need assistance to do their shopping in the Dolphin Shopping Centre
and the High Street.
Simon Hendey, Head of Housing and Community Services, Borough of Poole said: "The Council has maintained the grant funding for Poole Shopmobility over the last couple of years and continues to work with them to extend their services. This additional funding will help them extend the service to their customers over the festive season."
Councillor Elaine Atkinson, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Well-being, said: "The Dolphin Shopping Centre is a popular place for Christmas shopping especially for those who may have mobility issues. We wanted to make sure people had a choice of the day they do their Christmas shopping and that's why we are prepared to offer Shopmobility this extra one off grant."
The service will resume to a three days a week service after the Christmas period operating on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Ross Smith, General Manager of Shopmobility said: "Our aim is to ensure that all people with mobility problems are given the opportunities to get out and about in the local community and live full lives. As an organisation, we are doing all that we can to get the service back to six days a week on a permanent basis."
Poole Shopmobility has operated for 14 years and provide mobility equipment on a membership basis for daily hire. Membership costs are £20 a year plus £1 charge per hire. Equipment can be hired on a daily basis for visitors to the area or for those suffering a temporary mobility problem at the cost of £6 per hire (£5 refundable deposit also required).
Shoppers are advised to ring and discuss their needs beforehand and reserve a suitable piece of mobility equipment. Anyone who hasn't taken advantage of Shopmobility before will be given a short introduction on how the equipment works.
